In an incident that could have had severe consequences, officers from the traffic division of the Bielefeld highway police stopped a Hungarian-registered MAN articulated lorry on Friday, September 12, 2025. The vehicle, driven by a 59-year-old Serbian man, was inspected at the Sürenheide rest area.
During the inspection, experienced controllers found several defects on the vehicle. A major defect was discovered on a wheel of the trailer, as five out of the ten wheel bolts were completely sheared off and missing. The remaining bolts were so worn and loose that it was only a matter of time before they too would shear off. This could have caused the wheel to come off at full speed on the highway.
Moreover, the service and parking brake of the trailer were also found to be defective. As a result, the driver was immediately prohibited from continuing the journey until the defects were repaired. A security deposit was paid on the spot, and approximately 545 euros in fines were imposed.
