Transformed Corvette Concept: Shifting from a Sports Car to a Racing Vehicle

General Motors has taken the wraps off its latest design study, the California Corvette concept, a bold and innovative all-electric hypercar that showcases a blend of performance, design, and technology. The concept was developed by General Motors' Advanced Design studios in Pasadena, California.

Bryan Nesbitt, vice president of global design, stated that the Advanced Design teams are dedicated to shaping the future, driving innovation, and exploring what's possible. The California Corvette concept embodies this ethos, pushing the boundaries of what a Corvette can be.

Key Features and Specifications

The California Corvette concept is a low, wide, carbon-fiber hypercar with a removable canopy, active aero, an AR HUD, and all-electric propulsion. It measures 1,051mm in height, 2,184mm in width, and 4,669mm in length, with a 2,767mm wheelbase. The concept rides on staggered wheels with 21-inch fronts and 22-inch rears, wrapped in performance tires for enhanced grip and handling.

The car features a distinctive removable, front-hinged glass canopy roof that lifts off in one seamless motion, allowing transformation between a sleek coupe and an open-air track car. The design reflects Southern California’s sun-soaked style blended with Corvette heritage.

Inside, the cockpit is narrow and minimalist, emphasizing driver engagement with a yoke-style steering wheel and a customizable digital display. Vital information is projected via an advanced augmented reality heads-up display (AR HUD), enhancing driving focus. The minimalist interior centers on the driver with integrated structural elements, performance-focused displays, and an AR HUD designed for high-speed driving scenarios.

The concept's powertrain consists of a fully electric system with a T-shaped prismatic battery pack positioned low in the chassis for better seating position and aerodynamic efficiency. Specific motor configuration details were not disclosed. The body structure features a tunneled underbody, a lightweight carbon tub construction, an active aerodynamic spoiler, and an air brake system.

The concept's design strategy aims to maximize versatility within a single platform. GM's Pasadena facility spans 148,000 square feet across three buildings and houses approximately 130 staff covering design, creative services, sculpting, fabrication, and operations. The California Corvette concept is the second of three Corvette concept design studies planned for 2025, following the reveal of the first concept by General Motors' UK studio in March.
