United Arab Emirates Introduces Worldwide Energy Efficiency Coalition to Spur Climate Change Initiatives
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance (GEEA), an international initiative aimed at doubling global energy efficiency rates by 2030. The announcement was made by Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, at a ceremony in Brussels in June 2025.
The UAE currently chairs this alliance, which aligns with the UAE Consensus from COP28, demonstrating the country's commitment to making energy efficiency a leading priority in the international energy and climate agenda.
The GEEA is designed to transform global energy consumption patterns through enhanced collaboration, innovation, and policy alignment among countries, organisations, and the private sector. The alliance seeks to accelerate energy efficiency measures worldwide, thereby reducing energy waste and supporting global climate goals.
By driving the adoption of energy-efficient technologies, best practices, and regulatory frameworks across sectors, GEEA intends to reshape energy use at a systemic level, resulting in significant environmental and economic benefits by 2030. The alliance's vision is aligned with global net-zero ambitions and the push for a more sustainable, low-carbon energy future.
The GEEA will provide funding support to developing nations and support them with access to innovative solutions. It will also set unified efficiency standards globally and serve as a central hub for exchanging knowledge and best practices in energy efficiency. In addition, the Alliance will create unified tools for tracking progress in energy efficiency and offer technical support and capacity-building programs to member states.
Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs, emphasised the critical role of energy efficiency in achieving the Paris Agreement and UAE Consensus goals. Al Mazrouei invited nations and corporations worldwide to join the initiative, assuring them of the UAE's commitment to sharing its public-private partnership models and energy know-how.
The UAE Cabinet approved the Alliance before the announcement, underscoring the country's determination to lead the global charge towards a more energy-efficient future. The launch of GEEA marks a significant step towards transforming global energy consumption patterns and achieving a more sustainable, low-carbon energy future for all.
