Verdalia Bioenergy Secures €671m Deal for Europe's Largest Biomethane Projects
Verdalia Bioenergy has secured a significant milestone in Europe's biomethane industry, closing a €671m corporate financing deal. This is the largest of its kind in Europe and will support the construction and operation of biomethane projects across Spain and Italy.
The financing, backed by a consortium of leading international banks and global investment groups, will enable Verdalia to build and operate biomethane projects with a capacity of over 3 TWh per year. In Spain, the company is expanding its footprint, with plans to start three plants this year, including its first in the country.
Uniper and Five Bioenergy have signed a seven-year biomethane purchase agreement, involving three of Spain's largest biomethane plants. This deal further solidifies Verdalia's position in the market. The company's founders, Gary Jones and Duncan McTier, along with co-founder and CEO Fernando Bergasa, have expressed their excitement about this significant step for the company and the European biomethane industry.
The total capital deployed will exceed €1bn, covering both greenfield and brownfield growth over the next four years. Verdalia Bioenergy currently operates seven plants in Italy and has six more under construction, expected to start grid injection in early 2026. Matteo Botto Poala, Managing Director at Goldman Sachs Alternatives, sees this financing as validation of biomethane's attractiveness to infrastructure capital, marking a significant moment for the industry.
