Vienna's Energy Shift: Natural Gas Supplies Cease, Shifting Towards Green Pastures

Vienna, the Austrian capital, is taking significant strides in its mission to achieve climate neutrality by 2040. As part of this ambitious plan, the city has launched an initiative called the "Out of Gas" project, which aims to phase out fossil gas usage and transition the city's energy supply towards renewable sources.

The project is one of the key elements in Vienna's broader climate action strategy, which encompasses decarbonizing energy supply, urban heat mitigation, energy efficiency, public engagement, and green job creation. The city is focusing on decarbonizing its energy supply by tapping into renewable resources such as geothermal energy, planting trees, and installing mist showers to combat rising temperatures.

The "Out of Gas" project specifically targets the replacement of approximately 470,000 decentralized gas boilers in Vienna with CO2-free alternatives by 2040. Jürgen Czernohorszky, Vienna's Climate Councilor, emphasizes the importance of convincing Viennese residents that a livable, climate-friendly future without gas and oil is possible.

To facilitate this transition, the "Out of Gas local" information point at Amerlingstraße 11 in Vienna offers free initial consultations and information on funding and financing options. Tenants in Vienna are also supported in networking between owners, tenants, and property managers at this information point.

The Mariahilf district, already host to a large district heating pioneer project, continues to be a focus of the "Out of Gas" project. The project is being expanded to districts, with a pilot project in the Mariahilf district. The interest in the "Out of Gas" project is significant, reflecting the need for solutions to replace gas boilers in Vienna.

The "Hauskunft" city-wide consultation center for renovation issues is still actively involved in the "Out of Gas" project. The number of monthly consultation sessions for renovation in Vienna's 6th district has nearly doubled since the opening of the "Out of Gas" consultation office.

Jürgen Czernohorszky expresses the goal of the "Out of Gas" project to demonstrate that a climate-friendly future can be livable. As of the report, 75 initial contacts have been made, and 30 intensive consultation sessions have been held. The "Out of Gas" project aims to contribute to Vienna's ultimate goal of climate neutrality by 2040.

This project is part of Vienna's efforts to meet its climate plan and reduce CO2 emissions significantly. By phasing out fossil gas and replacing it with renewable heating and energy solutions, Vienna is working towards a more sustainable and livable future for its residents.

  1. The "Out of Gas" project, an essential component of Vienna's climate action strategy, focuses on renewable energy, specifically aiming to replace fossil gas boilers with CO2-free alternatives by 2040.
  2. In the broader context of Vienna's mission for climate neutrality, the city is decarbonizing its energy supply through renewable resources such as geothermal energy, tree planting, and mist showers for heat mitigation.
  3. Environmental science plays a crucial role in the "Out of Gas" project, as it aims to reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to a more sustainable future, aligning with the principles of climate-change science.
  4. To finance this transition towards renewable energy, the "Out of Gas local" information point at Amerlingstraße 11 offers consultations on funding and financing options for Viennese residents, tenants, and property managers.
