Vietnam's Long Thành Airport to Revolutionize International Flights in Winter 2026
Long Thành International Airport, under construction in Đồng Nai Province, is set to revolutionize air travel in Vietnam. Come winter 2026, it will start handling international flights to Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Central Asia. When it opens in June 2026, airlines are encouraged to shift their international flights to this new hub.
The transition will be gradual and phased. From October 31, 2027, Tân Sơn Nhất Airport will handle flights under 1,000km, with the remaining international flights operating from Long Thành. No new international flight permits will be granted at Tân Sơn Nhất, requiring airlines to operate at Long Thành for new routes or increased frequencies. Authorities will assist airlines in shifting operations. Southeast Asian flights will move to Long Thành between March 28 and October 30, 2027.
Initially, Long Thành will handle a portion of domestic routes based on demand, with Tân Sơn Nhất remaining the primary hub for domestic flights. The Civil Aviation Authority of Việt Nam (CAAV) has proposed a plan to manage this transition, ensuring smooth air traffic flow between the two airports.
Long Thành International Airport's opening in June 2026 marks a significant step in Vietnam's aviation industry. It will gradually take over international flight operations from Tân Sơn Nhất, starting with winter 2026 routes to Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Central Asia. The transition, planned to align with Long Thành's infrastructure progress, will see all international flights expected to move to Long Thành after 2030.
