Volvo announces the PHASE-OUT of the electric car model EX60, to be REPLACED by the mid-size SUV XC60.

Volvo's electric vehicle landscape is set to change with the introduction of the EX60, a mid-size SUV that promises innovation and advancement over current models like the XC60.

Unlike the XC60, which primarily offers gas engines, mild hybrids, and a plug-in hybrid variant, the EX60 will be a fully electric vehicle (BEV). One of its key features is a structural battery pack, similar to those found in Tesla and BYD vehicles. This means the battery is integrated as a structural part of the chassis, enhancing rigidity and reducing overall vehicle weight.

The EX60 will also be based on a new EV-specific platform, shared with the larger EX90. This modern electric vehicle architecture, designed explicitly for BEVs, is a departure from the XC60's platform, which accommodates hybrid systems.

The EX60's battery, while smaller than the EX90’s 107-kWh pack, could potentially offer improved efficiency. The exact range enabled by the EX60’s battery capacity is yet to be seen, but it is expected to be more than the XC60's plug-in hybrid's estimated 35 miles of electric-only range.

The debut of the EX60 is scheduled for January 2026, marking it as a new generation electric Volvo rather than an adaptation of an existing model. The EX60's design incorporates new battery technology, LED headlights, flush door handles, a hidden radiator grille, and aerodynamic alloy wheels, visually resembling the EX30 and EX90.

In addition to its technological advancements, the EX60's production process allows for shorter production times, thanks to its innovative design. The new rear floor of the EX60, for example, allows for a larger trunk volume and shorter production times. The cast rear underbody, a single aluminum unit, weighs 15-20 percent less than a traditional stamped part, offering equal, if not better, safety and durability.

The EX60 is set to replace the partially electric XC60, positioning itself in the electric car lineup of Volvo between the battery version of the XC40 (EX40) and the large SUV EX90. As Volvo continues to push the boundaries of electric vehicle technology, the EX60 promises to be an exciting addition to their lineup.

| Feature | Volvo EX60 | Volvo XC60 (2025) | |------------------------|---------------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------| | Powertrain | Fully electric (BEV) | Gasoline, mild hybrid, and plug-in hybrid| | Battery | Structural battery integrated into chassis | Conventional 18.8-kWh battery (T8 plug-in)| | Platform | New EV-specific platform shared with EX90 | Current XC60 platform (hybrid/gas capable)| | Electric Range | Not yet confirmed; smaller battery than EX90| ~35 miles electric range in plug-in hybrid| | Debut / Model Year | January 2026 (likely 2027 model year) | Available for 2025 model year | | Size | Smaller footprint than EX90, mid-size SUV | Compact luxury SUV |
