VRR Enhances Public Transport: 36 New FLIRT XL Trains Coming in 2029

The Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association (VRR) has made significant strides in improving public transport. It has awarded VIAS Rail GmbH the contract to operate lines S 5, S 8, and RE 41. To facilitate this, Stadler will deliver 36 state-of-the-art FLIRT XL trains, set to commence operation in December 2029.

The new trains, expected to be in service by the end of 2029, will be delivered in the distinctive green-and-white design of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn. They will be owned by the VRR and operated, maintained, and serviced by VIAS. Each vehicle is a spacious three-part unit, measuring around 70 meters in length and offering 180 seats. They are equipped with six wide doors per side and large multi-purpose areas, ensuring quick passenger exchange and ample space for wheelchairs, bicycles, strollers, and luggage.

The transport contract runs until December 2044, with operation of lines S 5 and S 8 scheduled to begin in December 2029, followed by line RE 41 in December 2030. Notably, all vehicles are equipped with toilets, ensuring passenger comfort during journeys.

The VRR's financing model will be used for this project, with the vehicles becoming the property of the VRR. The introduction of these modern, comfortable, and accessible trains is set to enhance the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn network, improving passenger experience and capacity.
