Western Union Acquires Intermex to Expand North American and Latin American Presence

Western Union, a leading global money transfer company, has announced the acquisition of Intermex for approximately $500 million. This move is aimed at strengthening Western Union's North American retail operations, expanding market coverage in high-potential geographies, and accelerating digital new customer acquisition [1][3][4].

The acquisition is expected to broaden Western Union’s retail presence in the U.S. by combining Intermex’s 10,000 sending locations with Western Union’s 40,000, facilitating wider physical reach to key consumer segments [3]. It will also unlock operational efficiencies and cost synergies, with Western Union expecting about $30 million in cost savings within 24 months by merging operations and streamlining expenses [4].

Moreover, the deal is expected to accelerate digital engagement and omni-channel strategy, boosting new customer acquisition through enhanced digital platforms supported by Intermex’s market knowledge and agent relationships [1][4]. It will also expand market coverage in Latin America and the Caribbean corridors, where Intermex has strong corridors such as the U.S. to Mexico, Guatemala, and other countries [3][4].

Western Union plans to incorporate Intermex's products and services, such as cheque acceptance and payroll cards, across its own agents to expand its product set in the region. The company also plans to bring its broader payout network to Intermex agents and sees the acquisition serving its goal of driving a controlled expansion of company-owned stores in the U.S. [5].

Intermex has been facing critical headwinds to its core business, which is cash-based remittances from the US to Latin America. However, the average total principal sent by each customer over the quarter has been growing, driving increased revenue from foreign exchange gain [7].

Despite the passing of the US remittance tax being set to create further headwinds for Intermex, Western Union is framing the acquisition as a long-term strategy designed to position it for strength over years rather than quarters [9]. The deal is valued at $16 per share, a 50% increase on the average weighted share price Intermex has seen for the last three months [10].

In Q1 2025, Intermex reported $4.9 million in digital revenue, which was 4% of its revenue from wire transfers and money order fees, and 3% of its revenue overall [8]. Western Union, on the other hand, reported digital revenue of around $257 million in Q2 2025 [11].

The combining of the two brands already represents a significant uplift for WU’s revenue in the region, with FY 2024 revenue being $2.1 billion and Q2 2025 revenue around $500 million [12]. Western Union anticipates achieving annual run-rate cost synergies of around $30 million within two years of the deal closing, which is currently set for mid 2026 [13].

Intermex has reported YoY increases in the average principal sent per transaction for the last three quarters [6]. Despite a contraction in revenue from money transfer fees in Q2 and a 5% drop in Q1, and a decrease in the number of active customers, the company's digital revenue is significantly lower compared to other competitors [2].

In conclusion, by integrating Intermex, Western Union aims to consolidate its leadership in money transfer services across North America and Latin America while pushing forward on digital transformation to grow its omni-channel service offerings [1][4]. The acquisition is expected to boost Western Union’s North American retail operations and position it for long-term growth.
