Solar Energy Dominance: Germany Steps Up as a Global Player
World currently ranks Germany as the fourth-highest solar power generator globally.
Though it may be overshadowed by the sheer size of China, the United States, and India, Germany is making a big name for itself in the solar energy sector. With an installed solar power capacity of over 100 gigawatts, Germany stands fourth worldwide, as announced by the German Solar Association before the Intersolar trade fair in Munich. By the end of 2023, global solar energy expansion is expected to surpass the 600-gigawatt mark—nearly double the amount from 2022.
Last year, Germany ranked fourth globally in total installed capacity, according to the German Solar Association—behind much larger countries like China, the United States, and India. In 2022 alone, Germany added 17.5 gigawatts of solar power capacity, recording a robust 14 percent increase. The association plans to publish a more detailed assessment soon.
The association also shared that Germany has commissioned its two-millionth solar power storage system, with around 600,000 new solar batteries added last year. Home storage systems are now de rigueur for new solar systems installed in single-family homes, while large-scale storage systems in the megawatt range have seen a recent surge in demand. These serve to smooth out fluctuations in the power grid.
In the European Union, Germany is a solar power leader, with solar electricity output reaching roughly 60 TWh in 2022, surpassing the combined production of Italy and Spain. Compared to other countries, Germany's installed capacity—while smaller—is significant, thanks to its robust technological base and supportive policy environment.
The solar sector is poised for further growth, with Germany aiming to continue its expansion, driven by the need to meet renewable energy targets and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
